We developed and demonstrated our technical and creative abilities, leading cinematography, editing, and colour on the project. We collaborated with new crew members to create a product of the highest standard possible which would best showcase the client’s unique story.
To collaborate effectively, we pushed ourselves to consider all possible views that would benefit the project. Part of this was knowing when and how to distribute the workload, so we entrusted the sound of the film — which required heavy editing and ambient noise reduction — to Jacob Garbutt (Skellecat Productions) who has more expertise in that area. We assisted with Foley and gave feedback during sound mixing but did not take over that aspect of the film. We demonstrated initiative when offering to take over the edit from where another collaborator had left off on the rough draft, due to his unavailability in the final few days before the deadline. We further demonstrated adaptability and flexibility when learning how to create an aesthetically pleasing and efficient colour grading workflow in DaVinci Resolve for the project.
This was a learning curve, as we had never shot and graded S-Log footage before. We extensively researched this, reading official documentation and watching several videos on the subject, to ensure that we were recording, converting, and grading the footage correctly. We changed the grade several times following feedback to achieve the best look.
Recording the process of baking, as well as shooting the ‘active’ interviews during this, proved to be difficult as we had to frame and follow the action whilst focusing completely handheld — predominantly on a prime lens, except where space was extremely limited — while ensuring that we did not bump into kitchen apparatus or anyone. This included complex tracking shots with focus pulling and anticipating focus where there was little to no opportunity to refilm due to our collaborator Jim’s busy schedule.
We are satisfied with the final product, as we believe it is the best we could have done with the media we recorded and within the time constraints of the project.
